My favorite Firefox add-ons (Part 1)

Everyone should know by know that Firefox is the best web browser in the Universe (except for the planet Zabulon).

One of the things that makes Firefox so great is that it runs on several platforms. I can use Firefox in Ubuntu on my work laptop, on my MacBook at home and even on Windows, when I’m forced to use some crappy tool that doesn’t work on a decent OS.

But what also makes Firefox so great, and is kinda the whole subject of this post, are all the Add-ons that are available to extend Firefox with extra functionality.

Enough intro, here are my favorite Firefox add-ons (part 1):

  • Personas: a new way of changing the look of Firefox.
  • TwitterFox: allows you to send Twitter updates from within Firefox.
  • Greasemonkey: Allows you to customize the way a webpage displays using small bits of JavaScript. Look at userscripts.org for useful scripts.
  • Google Browser sync: This allows me to sync my Firefox settings and bookmarks between different computers.
  • Adblock: allows you to remove ads from a website. I’m not against advertisement on website, but some sites have so much ads that it is hard to read the content.
  • Flashblock: This add-on blocks Flash content from loading when the website is loaded. Instead, it displays a button that gives you control on when to load the flash content. I added this after those aggressive flash ads kept ‘flashing’ on my screen when all I wanted to do was read a news article.

These are some of the most essential add-ons for me. Part 2 with more add-ons will follow soon.

  1. You should give foxtunes a try, I like it much better than google browser sync that I used before. I regulary had popups requesting my password when it somehow couldn’t sync. With foxtunes you can also log into their website and lookup your bookmarks there, very useful for when you are logged into another computer and want to look something up.

  2. You mean Foxmarks?

  3. Yeuh, yes Foxmarks woeps
